I Bought an EV and Charge It With Solar – Here Is What Changed

I do not just sell solar. I live it. Here is my personal story of going solar and switching to an electric vehicle, and what it has actually meant for my daily life and my wallet.

The Decision That Started It All

I have been in the solar industry for a while now, helping Maryland homeowners, churches, and businesses navigate their options and find the right solution. But for a long time, I was doing what a lot of people in this industry do: recommending something I had not fully experienced myself.

That changed when I made the leap to solar on my own home. And then, in December 2025, I purchased an electric vehicle. That is when everything clicked.

Goodbye, $4.30 Gas

Let me paint the picture. Before the EV, I had a daily commute that was costing me a significant amount in gas every month. With gas prices hovering above $4.30 per gallon in Maryland, that adds up fast. A full tank was running me over $60, and I was filling up at least once a week. That is over $250 a month just to get back and forth to work and client meetings.

Now? I plug in at home at night and wake up with a full charge. The electricity my car uses is offset by the solar energy my home generates. My daily commute costs me almost nothing. Not a reduced amount. Not a small amount. Almost nothing.

The first time I drove past a gas station after a month with the EV and realized I had not stopped there in weeks, it hit me: this is what energy independence actually feels like.

The Solar + EV Combination Is the Real Game Changer

Here is what most people do not realize: solar panels alone save you money on your electricity bill. That is great. But when you pair solar with an electric vehicle, you are essentially eliminating two bills at once – your electricity bill AND your gas bill. The savings compound on each other.

Think about it. The average Maryland household spends around $150 per month on electricity and $250 or more on gas. That is $400 per month in energy costs. With solar panels and an EV, I have cut that number dramatically. The solar panels generate clean energy for my home AND my car. One investment, two major savings.

And unlike gas prices, which swing wildly based on global politics and oil company decisions, my solar production is locked in. The sun does not have a pricing department.

What I Tell My Clients Now

Before I had this firsthand experience, my solar consultations were great. I knew the numbers, I knew the incentives, I knew the technology. But now, when a homeowner sits across from me and asks, “Is this really worth it?” – I can look them in the eye and tell them exactly what changed for me, in my life, with real dollar amounts.

I tell them about the gas station I do not stop at anymore. I tell them about the electric bill that used to stress me out every summer. I tell them about the peace of mind of knowing that my energy costs are not at the mercy of utility rate hikes or OPEC decisions.

There is a huge difference between a salesperson saying “you should do this” and someone saying “I did this, and here is what happened.” I am the second person now.

It Is Not Just About Money

The financial savings are real and they are significant. But honestly, the thing that surprised me most was how it felt. There is something deeply satisfying about pulling into your driveway, plugging in your car, and knowing that the energy flowing into that battery was generated by the sun hitting your roof that morning. You are not sending money to an oil company or a utility monopoly. You are powering your life with clean energy that you generated yourself.

For someone like me who supports The GOD’S CHILD Project and cares deeply about environmental stewardship, that feeling is everything. It is the reason I got into this business, and it is the reason I will never go back.
